The Redneck Sommelier
with Joey and Kristen Skelton

At All Saints
Joey and Kristen Skelton love all things gustatory, be it Michelin-starred restaurants, home-cooked meals, or a one-of-a-kind roadside diner. Joey is from Appalachia, and Kristen is from the Deep South. Yet, their medical careers have taken them across the country and the world and given them an appreciation of wine yet an even greater appreciation of good, simple food. They enjoy nothing more than the best of both great food and great wine. Their medical careers and jobs as parents of two boys leave them little time, so they combine their vices and hobbies- food and wine. They enjoy teaching the basics of wine in a way anyone can understand and hopefully figure out which wine they want, and they do so in an approachable and non-stuffy manner… some even call it a redneck manner! This class will teach basic approaches to wine, from sparkling to dessert wine, from white to reds, from sweet to dry, and pair them with simple foods. Many dishes may include ingredients that can be allergens; each participant must determine if that is a problem for them.
Joey Skelton, MD, MS, is a Professor of Pediatrics and Vice-Chair of Research at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He leads a Culinary Medicine program that teaches medical students nutrition through cooking. Kristen Skelton, Pharm D, BCP, is a Surgical Critical Care Pharmacist at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She enjoys a wide variety of cooking but mainly enjoys knowing more about all of it than Joey.
